Who is MBL?
Member Business Lending, LLC (MBL) is the nation’s leading credit union service organization (CUSO) dedicated to member business lending. We provide loan services for all types of member business loans, and altogether, our participating credit unions currently produce more than half of all credit union-generated SBA loans in the U.S.
What does MBL do?
We enable credit unions to make member business loans wisely and profitably. We work as a cooperative to maximize the effectiveness of participating credit unions’ member business lending programs while minimizing their risk, expense and staffing requirements. We do this by providing the following services:
- Training
- Procedures
- Risk Assessment and Analysis
- Closing
- Servicing and Support
- Liquidation
- Annual Review
- Audit and Compliance
- Capital Management and Liquidity Solutions
How do credit unions benefit from member business lending?
In addition to the exceptionally low cost of participation (typically less than one fifth the cost of developing and maintaining an in-house business lending program), participating credit unions realize extraordinary growth in ROA, while achieving some of the lowest default and loss rates in the industry. Member satisfaction, retention and recruitment efforts are enhanced by this tremendous service, especially within the traditionally underserved small business community.
How do credit union members benefit from member business lending?
Small businesses in your area, which maybe be underserved or ignored by banks, will be able to get the smaller loans they need to grow and succeed (MBL’s average loan size is $60,000, less than half of the national average). At the same time, MBL greatly enhances small businesses’ prospects for success, as is demonstrated by delinquency rates of 1.08 percent and loss rates of .31 percent, each of which is about one tenth of the national average.
What are some of MBL’s accomplishments?
In the fiscal 2008 through May, MBL participants generated 65.5 percent of all credit union-based SBA 7(a) loans and 29 percent of SBA 504 loans. Our members make up seven of the 10 leading credit union SBA loan producers in the U.S. and eleven of the top 20. If our member credit unions were considered a single lender, we would be the 11th -largest producer of SBA loans in the nation, including banks.
2007 CUSO Collaboration and Cooperation Award
MBL was selected as the recipient of the prestigious annual CUSO Collaboration and Cooperation Award for 2007 by the National Association of Credit Union Service Organizations (NACUSO). For more information, visit NACUSO's Web site
What differentiates MBL from its competition?
Our most significant competitive advantage is our staff’s expertise—nearly 100 years of combined experience in business lending! MBL was an early mover in offering business lending services to credit unions. Our model allows participants to behave as if they had their own business lending department, without the $200,000 – $300,000 initial investment and significant yearly expenditures thereafter, which would typically include marketing, processing, underwriting, servicing personnel, as well as software licenses.
Does MBL serve only large credit unions?
No. We have the ability to service the needs of credit unions of all sizes. Our current members range in size from $40 million in assets to over $4 billion.
What kind of training do you offer?
We offer a wide variety of training for credit union leaders, business development officers, and branch staff. Click here to learn more.
Does MBL only work with SBA loans?
No. We also provide services for all types of commercial loans.
